We had a great turnout for out last virtual meeting! Dr. Greg Soules with CB&I Storage Solutions, a division of McDermott International, presented on “Selection and Design of Large Field Erected Storage Tanks”.
In the presentation, Dr. Soules discussed how large storage tanks for hydrocarbon liquids are being built at a rapid clip in the United States due to the significant amount of oil and gas that hydraulic fracturing has unlocked in the lower 48 states. The presentation covered the common types of large storage tanks, various roof structure schemes, and tank sizing considerations. Dr. Soules provided key insights into design considerations such as wind loads on tanks, seismic loads, snow loads, material selection, corrosion allowance, and much more. His presentation included some great images and videos of tanks performing well under various conditions, but also included some brief case studies on failures of tanks.
Looking forward, our next monthly meeting will be on April 15th, 2021, and we are excited to have Dr. Bijan Aalami of PT-Structures presenting on “Design Steps of Post-Tensioned Floors”. Please join us and stay connected with the Houston structural engineering community.
