At our last monthly meeting at Maggiano’s, Dr. Joseph Colaco presented on his contributions to the design of Pennzoil Place, a unique icon of downtown Houston. Dr. Colaco shared intriguing photographs from construction, and walked through several of the design challenges that he and his team took on to ensure the timely completion of the project. Some of the interesting challenges included the scaled wind tunnel tests to model the trapezoidal-shaped twin structures, which were constructed only 10 feet from each other; and the location of the stiff, inner core to resist torsion.

During our last meeting, we were also able to hear from our 2019 State Conference Scholarship recipient, Tristian Ybarra, as he discussed what he learned from attending this year’s State Conference and some of his internship experiences at L.A. Fuess.

We look forward to seeing those of you who signed up for the Topgolf event on Thursday, November 7, from 4 to 7 pm. There will be great food, great fun, and great opportunity to network. Following this, we are happy to host Dr. Silky Sze Ki Wong, who will be presenting on “Onshore Modularization for Refining and Petrochemical Industries”. Please be sure to join us as we meet again on November 21 at Maggiano’s at Memorial City Mall.
