At our last monthly virtual meeting, we had the honor of hosting Mr. William Coulbourne, owner of Coulbourne Consulting, who presented on Designing for Flood Loads Using ASCE 7 and ASCE 24. The topic of designing for floods is very relevant in Houston and we had a great turnout for this monthly meeting.
His presentation began by covering the basics of floodplains and flood maps. He then delved into the specifics of ASCE 24, Flood Resistant Design and Construction and flood loading requirements of ASCE 7-16, Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. His presentation included images and discussion of structures which were damaged during flood events. He ended his presentation on a discussion regarding climate change and the potential challenges facing engineers with rising water levels.
