UPDATE: Previous edition of the newsletter listed SEAoT’s lobbyist providing an update prior to the October meeting. However, this has since been moved to November and expanded to a longer presentation for which we can offer additional PDH in ethics. Please check next month’s newsletter and/or event announcement for details.*
At our September 19, Keith Bohren of Simpson Strong-Tie, presented on “New Provisions for Qualification and Design of Post-Installed Anchors (Adhesive and Mechanical) into Cracked and Uncracked Masonry”. Keith reviewed the change from the allowable stress design approach to the new criteria which incorporate ultimate strength design. He also showed photos of a Simpson test facility which was neat to see.
We also had a very succesful SEAoT Houston Happy Hour at Kirby Ice House September 26, which was attended by several members, a potential new member, and 5 graduate students from University of Houston.
It was great chatting with everyone about what’s happening in their industry or area of
practice, or in the case of the grad students, their research. These U of H students are
working on some really cool research, including 3-d printed structures, new methods of
non-destructive assessment for cold formed steel behind cladding, and AI. AI is all over the
place these days. At this stage, even the research that isn’t specifically investigating AI is
probably still utilizing AI in some way.
Our next meeting will be October 17 at Maggiano’s – Memorial City. Sathish Ramamoorthy, Ph.D., P.E., of Stress Engineering Services, Inc., will be presenting “Advanced Finite Element Analysis Tools for design of components in Upstream Oil & Gas Industry”. Please RSVP at the registration page by noon October 16, then pay via PayPal button at the payment page.
We’re still trying to get the word out that applications are open for SEAoT Houston’s 2024 scholarship. The application form can be downloaded from this link.
If you know any structural or civil/structural graduate students, or undergrads in their senior year, at Prairie View A&M, Rice University, Texas A&M University, or University of Houston, please pass along this information and encourage them to apply.
Until next time,
